What You Don't Know About Abrasives: Natural Abrasive Materials

Understanding Natural Abrasive Materials

Abrasives are a type of granular crystal used in coated abrasive products, which are formed by high-temperature calcination and the combination of different types of elements. Abrasives are usually divided into natural abrasive materials and artificial abrasives.

Among them, natural abrasive materials are produced by the accumulation of nature, with limited output and relatively high prices. Artificial abrasives, on the other hand, are synthesized through artificial element crystals, with relatively higher output and lower prices. The grinding effect is not much different from that of natural abrasives. Natural abrasive materials refer to all materials in nature that can be used for grinding or grinding.

Types of Natural Abrasive Materials

Diamond

Diamond is a type of natural abrasive material. It is the hardest substance known so far, with a hardness of 98.59Gpa. The main components of diamond are carbon and other impurities of varying proportions. The origin is limited, so the price is also very expensive. Diamond is mainly used to correct grinding wheels and processing materials that are difficult to grind (such as cemented carbide, gemstones, stones, etc.)

Natural Corundum

The main component of natural corundum is α-AL203, with a hardness of 20.58Gpa.

High-quality corundum: titanium-containing sapphires, chromium-containing rubies, etc. This type of corundum is mainly used in the manufacture of various jewelry.

Ordinary corundum: black or brown. This type of corundum is mainly used to make grinding wheels, oilstones, sandpaper, emery cloth, etc.

Garnet

Garnet, a professional term in geology, is one of the main rock-forming minerals in the crust and upper mantle. The shape and color of garnet crystals are very similar to those of pomegranate seeds, hence the name "garnet".

Garnet is a mineral widely used in many industries. It has unique chemical composition and physical properties and is an important gemstone and craft material. Here is some information about the application research report on garnet:

  • Gemstone application: Garnet is a popular gemstone and is often used to make jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Its bright color and good transparency make it the first choice for jewelry designers and consumers.

  • Abrasive application: Garnet has the characteristics of high hardness and wear resistance and can be used as a natural abrasive material. It is often used to make tools such as sandpaper and grinding wheels for metal processing, stone processing and other processes.

Quartz

Quartz is composed of SiO2, which is often mixed with AL203, Fe203, CaO MgO Fe203, etc., with a hardness of 80.4Gpa. Natural abrasive materials used are vein quartz, quartzite, quartz sand, etc.

Main uses: high-grade glass, glass products, refractory materials, smelting stones, precision casting, grinding wheel abrasives, etc.

The limitations of natural abrasive materials have been replaced by most artificial abrasives. Currently, only diamond and garnet are still in use.
