How to Choose the Right Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide Abrasive for Your Production Process

When choosing brown fused aluminum oxide, you may find that the market prices vary widely. Some are available for over 1000, while others go for over 5000. How should you choose?

What is Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide

Brown fused aluminum oxide, commonly known as emery, is an artificial abrasive. It is produced by melting and reducing a mixture of bauxite, carbon material, and iron filings in an electric arc furnace at 2050 degrees. The result is a brownish artificial corundum. Brown fused aluminum oxide's mainchemical componentis AL2O3 (aluminum oxide). The content of first-class genuine products is 95.00%—96.00%. It also contains small quantities of Fe (iron),Si (silicon),Ti (titanium), etc. Brown fused aluminum oxide is the fundamental abrasive. It is widely used due to its good grinding performance, broad applicability, and low price.

How to Select Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide Abrasives?

It's not about which grade of brown fused aluminum oxide is the best, but which one is the best for your product. Here, we summarize the pros and cons of each grade, for your reference:

First-Class

Brown fused aluminum oxide with aluminum content above 95% is called first-class brown fused aluminum oxide.

  • Features: High hardness, sharpness, wear resistance, self-sharpening properties, good grinding performance, moderate toughness.

  • Disadvantages: The highest price.

  • Suitable for high-demand sandblasting, rust removal, deburring, free grinding, resin grinding wheels, resin cutting pieces, ceramic grinding wheels, high-end sand cloth/sandpaper, steelmaking, ironmaking, precision casting, and other refractory materials.

Second-Class

Brown fused aluminum oxide with an aluminum content of about 90% is called second-class brown fused aluminum oxide.

  • Features: Sharp, wear-resistant, moderate hardness.

  • Disadvantages: Lower aluminum content, slightly lower hardness, increased iron content.

  • Slightly lower price, suitable for general sandblasting, rust removal, deburring, free grinding, resin grinding wheels, resin cutting pieces, sand cloth/sandpaper, etc. Not suitable for ceramic grinding wheels, not suitable for refractory materials.

Third-Class

Brown fused aluminum oxide with an aluminum content of 80%-85% is called third-class brown fused aluminum oxide.

  • Features: Slightly lower hardness, sharpness, slightly greater toughness.

  • Disadvantages: Lower aluminum content, lower hardness, increased iron content, increased dust during sandblasting.

  • Lower price, suitable for general sandblasting, rust removal, deburring, free grinding, resin grinding wheels, resin cutting pieces, sand cloth/sandpaper, etc. Not suitable for ceramic grinding wheels, not suitable for refractory materials. Not recommended for sandblasting stainless steel workpieces.

Fourth-Class

Brown fused aluminum oxide with an aluminum content of about 60% is called fourth-class brown fused aluminum oxide.

  • Features: Low hardness, sharpness, high iron content.

  • Disadvantages: Low aluminum content, low hardness, high iron content, increased dust during sandblasting.

  • Lowest price, suitable for general sandblasting, rust removal, deburring, free grinding, resin grinding wheels, resin cutting pieces, sand cloth/sandpaper, etc. Not suitable for ceramic grinding wheels, not suitable for refractory materials. Not recommended for sandblasting stainless steel workpieces.

The above is a rough classification of brown fused aluminum oxide based on aluminum content. Since there is no unified standard, different customers may define first-class, second-class, third-class, and fourth-class differently during market transactions. The above is for reference only.

In practical applications, in addition to aluminum content, other chemical elements like silicon, iron, titanium, calcium, magnesium, etc., can also affect brown fused aluminum oxide's performance. Physical factors such as particle composition, bulk density, magnetic materials, cleanliness, hydrophilicity, etc., also influence the application and performance of brown fused aluminum oxide.
